New Uber safety feature available in Ottawa

By CityNews Ottawa

Ottawa is the first Canadian city to pilot a new Uber feature that makes rides safer for both passengers and drivers.

According to Keerthana Rang, the corporate communications lead at Uber Canada, the new technology will allow 9-1-1 to detect the vehicle's location in real time during an emergency.

“If a rider or driver ever feels unsafe, they can call 9-1-1 through the in-app emergency button, and it will automatically send their real-time location, trip information, car make and model, and license plate directly to the local 9-1-1 dispatch centre,” Rang said.

While Ottawa is the first city to pilot the new feature, Rang said they hope to expand to other Canadian cities.
