Mayoral hopeful Mike Maguire is proposing a platform he believes will get people into affordable housing faster.
Maguire told The Sam Laprade Show on Tuesday, Sept. 6, that he's proposing tiny homes of roughly 800 sq. ft. that would be built in the established rural communities in Ottawa and eventually be part of the housing mix in suburban development. Maguire added that with a reasonable down payment, the mortgage would be roughly the same as renting a two-bedroom apartment.
“The idea is that with a small lot, with a small home, you can get into something that you will own yourself, you can begin…to generate some value in your family by building equity in a house,” he said, adding that young professionals who no longer want to rent would then have the option to live in a more rural environment.
In a press release, he said that while researching this option, he visited the Guildcrest Homes factory in Morewood, Ont., where they said they could develop an affordable, high-quality tiny home.
“Tiny homes aren't a solution to all the housing challenges in Ottawa; however, for people who have given up on the dream of owning their own home, I believe that providing this entry-level option represents a great opportunity,” Maguire said.
