Low, Que. under water advisory after E. coli found

By CityNews Ottawa

A boil-water advisory is in place after E.coli was found in the tap water of Low, Que., a municipality located about 60 km north of Gatineau.

The municipality's general manager Sandra Martineau, said in a notice on Friday, Sept. 23 that recent analyses showed the presence of fecal coliforms in the water.

“Contamination of water by these bacteria means that it may also contain microorganisms that are dangerous to your health,” Martineau wrote. “The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. “

The municipality recommends boiling water for at least one minute for the following activities:

  • Drinking and preparing beverages
  • Preparing infant formula and baby food
  • Washing and preparing food that will be eaten raw (fruits, vegetables, etc.);
  • Preparing food that does not require prolonged cooking (canned soups, desserts, etc.);
  • Making ice cubes
  • Brushing teeth and rinsing the mouth

Ice cube, beverages, and food prepared with unboiled tap water after Sept. 20, should be thrown out.

Unboiled tap water can be used for the following activities:

  • Washing dishes with hot water, making sure you dry them well
  • Washing clothes, showering, and bathing (Make sure young children do not swallow water while bathing or wash them with a facecloth)

Schools and businesses have been asked to shut their water fountains off.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused and thank you for your understanding,” Martineau wrote. “The municipality of Township of Low is currently taking all available measures to determine the source of the problem and correct it.”
