Perth's new mayor hopes to keep town's character while welcoming new residents

The next mayor of Perth is laying out her priorities for the next four years, which include building more housing in the town while also maintaining its small-town charm.

Mayor-elect Judy Brown won the election on Oct. 24, unseating four-term mayor John Fenik, and said voters felt that a change needed to be made.

“I only beat the incumbent by 64 votes but there was a third candidate, and she took over 500 votes,” Brown told The Sam Laprade Show on Oct. 28 “So, put those together and, yeah, a lot of people wanted a change.”

Brown's priorities for the four years ahead include building more housing, while not losing the town's character.

“Our population is projected to grow by 2,000 over the next ten years or so,” said Brown. “So, I would like to try and keep the neighbourly character of Perth, even though we're going to expand.”

Brown said she and town council will also need to develop a provincially-required plan to maintain its existing infrastructure, and will have to manage those costs without any major increases to property taxes.
