Teacher receives Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching

A first grade teacher at an Ottawa based Catholic school has received special recognition from the Governor General of Canada.

Barbara Ann Giroux, who teaches at Holy Family Catholic School, is a recipient of the 2022 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Giroux's winning school project, themed on Indigenous Reconciliation, encouraged her class to address a very challenging issue: do all children in Canada have the same rights? And if not, why?

“I am honoured and humbled to be recognized with this Governor General's History Award for Teaching Excellence,” she said in a release. “More importantly, I am proud that the children's learning is being acknowledged. I am immensely proud that their innate sense of justice and desire for social action have been their strongest learning outcomes.”

Her students read articles about challenges and inequities faced by Indigenous children and youth, and shared their discoveries through posters. Giroux even produced a podcast with her students.
