For the first time since the pandemic began, The Ottawa Mission is serving Christmas dinner in its dining hall on Dec. 18.
Speaking on The Sam Laprade Show on Nov. 23, The Ottawa Mission chief executive officer (CEO) Peter Tilley announced the dinner will be taking place in house with a full suite of guests helping to serve the meal.
“Christmas dinner is going to be a go as per normal,” said Tilley. “With the celebrities coming in, the new city councillors and hopefully the new mayor. We've confirmed the new police chief to come in and serve the population from the downtown core.”
Due to an increase in hunger in the community, The Ottawa Mission expects to serve over 14,000 meals this holiday season through its dinner and food truck program delivering full Christmas meals across the city.
“It will take about 6,500 pounds of turkey or 650 ten-pound turkeys to feed everyone who comes to our special Christmas dinner,” stated chef Ric Watson, director of food services at The Mission.
Members of the public can drop off frozen turkey donations between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the corner of Waller Street and Besserer Street. Ring the bell and mission staff will receive your donation.
Monetary donations to support the Christmas meal can be made at: https://ottawamission.com/donate/.
