National Capital Commission winter offerings open today

By CityNews Ottawa

Starting Sunday, Dec. 18, the National Capital Commission (NCC) opened its full suite of winter activity offerings at Gatineau Park.

This year, more than 22 kilometres were added to the more than 200 kilometres network of snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snow biking trails throughout the park.

Beyond Gatineau Park, thanks to a partnership with the Ville de Gatineau and the Centre de plein air du Lac-Leamy, there is a 15 kilometre shared trail network from Leamy Lake to Gatineau Park.

The NCC also works with the Urban Winter Trails Alliance and their volunteers to maintain more than 80 kilometres of urban winter trail space in the Ottawa region, including the Britannia Winter Trail Association, Kichi Sibi Winter Trail, Orleans Ski Club, Ottawa West Winter Trail, Rideau Winter Trail and Ski Heritage East.

Passes for access to Gatineau Park's trail network can be purchased online or at the trail head parking lot.

Those excited about the Rideau Canal Skateway will have to wait a little longer, as it will only open once surface ice has reached a minimum thickness of 30 centimetres.

Last winter season the canal opened for skating on January 14, 2022.
