NAC drag storytime supporters out match opposition

The organizers of drag storytime at the National Arts Centre (NAC) received hateful messaging in the run-up to their Wednesday, Feb. 8, show, but that didn't stop their supporters from coming out.

Capital Pride has hosted the event in partnership with the NAC and the Ottawa Public Library for a number of years,. The family-oriented event included live music and a visit from the Winterlude Ice Hogs, according to Toby Whitfield, executive director of Capital Pride.

“Sadly, we're seeing 2SLGBTQ+ communities and drag storytime specifically being targeted in so many cities across the country,” said Whitfield on The Sam Laprade Show before the event. “They said publicly, they want this to be the last time that Capitol Pride tries to organize a drag storytime in the city.”

“It won't be the last time we're not intimidated by this.”

On the morning of, protesters against the event were largely outnumbered by counter-protesters, a continuation of the support Capital Pride received as hateful messages flooded in.

“I think it's a demonstration of love and support,” said Whitfield. “We're really heartened by the the overwhelming support we've received in last few days.”

The event was part of Capital Pride's Winterlude programming and included stories from well-know performers China Doll and Cyril Cinder.

Ottawa city councillor Ariel Troster attended in support of the event, as well as Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Ottawa Centre Joel Harden.
