UPDATE: Twelve people, including two children, injured in gas explosion in east end of Ottawa

An explosion has destroyed several homes under construction in Orléans.

Ottawa Fire Services and (OFS) and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) responded to an explosion caused by a gas leak in the area of Tenth Line Road and Shallow Pond Place on the morning of Monday, February 13. As of 8 a.m., OFS reported that gas was still leaking. 

Firefighters used chainsaws to cut through a large amount of debris and have rescued one person from the wreckage who is said to be stable and talking. 

Officials said 12 people, including two children, were injured in a gas explosion in an east Ottawa suburb, with two of them being pulled out of the rubble. 

Those who have been displaced can find shelter at 2370 Tenth Line Road or at Tenth Line Road and  Sweetvalley Drive. 

Police officers and firefighters are directing people to OC Transpo busses that have been brought in to keep people warm. 

There are also road closures to be aware of in the area:

  • Tenth Line Road and Sweetvalley Drive
  • Tenth Line Road and Harvest Valley Avenue
     

Two people have been taken to hospital in serious but stable condition after the blast on Blossom Pass Terrace.

Reid Purdy of the Ottawa Paramedic Service said the two had to be extricated after the explosion in Orléans, while three other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Another five people were assessed at the scene and released.
