Kirsten Fox is walking in her uncle Terry’s footsteps. On April 12, she appeared on The Sam Laprade Show on CityNews to promote the 2023 Terry Fox Run. The fundraiser for cancer research her uncle began 43 years ago, and is scheduled this year for Sunday, September 17.
One of the people helping Fox promote this year’s run is actor Ryan Reynolds, who will post messages and invite all to share their own stories about cancer and how Terry’s legacy inspired them to support cancer research at #DearTerry.

It was April 1980 when an 18-year old cancer survivor from Port Coquitlam named Terry Fox dipped his toe in the Atlantic ocean to start his 7,500 trek across Canada, a run he called the “Marathon of Hope”. Terry Fox ran 5,400kms before succumbing to cancer in 1981.
His goal was to raise so many donations to fund research so that people wouldn’t die of cancer anymore. In 2021, 85,000 Canadians died of cancer.
“It took cancer to realize that being self-centred was not the way to live,” Terry Fox said during his initial run. “The answer is to try and help others.”
In 2021, 700 communities across Canada hosted runs raising more than $27 million. In the 43 years since the first Marathon of Hope, the Terry Fox Run has raised $850 million for cancer research.
“It’s a privilege to remember Terry’s name everyday and hopefully, make an impact one day by not having to say goodbye to people because they have cancer,” Kirsten said on The Sam Laprade Show.
