One man charged following hate-motivated assault on Preston street

One man facing charges following an assault, nearly two weeks ago.

Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said the man approached two young women on May 14, on Preston Street, yelling sexually inappropriate, anti-Indigenous violent slurs toward them.

Both parents intervened to protect their daughters and were assaulted by the man.

Police say 54-year-old Erick McEvoy has now been charged with the following:

  • Incite hatred in a public place
  • Assault x 2
  • Harassment by threatening conduct to other person x 4
  • Causing a disturbance

Police said he is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Anyone who has experienced a hate incident is asked to report it for further investigation.
