City staff reviewing options for safer cycling on Gladstone Avenue

A section of Gladstone Avenue is one step closer to getting a safety upgrade.

Somerset ward Coun. Ariel Troster tabled a motion for safe cycling infrastructure at Gladstone Avenue and Rochester Street during Thursday’s transportation committee meeting.

The motion, which recommends immediate fixes like signal timing signage and pavement markings, passed unanimously.

Community members have been calling on the city to address safety at the intersection after a collision with a dump truck left a cyclist with critical injuries.

A safe cycling rally was even held at the location Thursday morning ahead of the committee meeting.

City staff will also review more long-term options, which could include reconsidering that stretch of road as a designated truck route.

A feasibility study will also be done for bike lanes in that area.
