Victims assistance called in for roughly 30 people after row house fire in Nepean

Victims assistance is being provided for approximately 30 people after a row house fire in Nepean.

Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported visible smoke and flames coming from a six unit row house in the 40 block of Chesterton Drive, between Muvagh Avenue and Southview Crescent around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) declared a working fire while crews were on route to the scene as black smoke could been seen from Woodroffe Avenue.

While still responding, 9-1-1 callers were reporting that the entire back of the a middle unit was engulfed in flames and that all occupants of the attached row houses were evacuating.

OFS declared a ‘second alarm’ in order to dispatch more resources to the scene, and upon arrival, made entry through the front door and encountered heavy flames on the first floor.

Firefighters extinguished the flames on the first floor and second floors before using chainsaws to cut holes in the roof to check for open flames.

It took just over an hour to bring the fire under control and an investigator is now working to determine the cause.

A search of the unit confirmed there were no occupants inside at the time of the fire and no injures are reported.
