Police lay charges against 64-year-old from Ottawa after stolen plane crashes at Rockcliffe Airport

A stolen plane crashed at the Rockcliffe Airport late on Thursday, Sept. 14, prompting an investigation from Ottawa police.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said one person is in custody.

According to the OPS, a privately owned plane was stolen, and crashed on the airport property, damaging two other planes.

Located at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum on the Sir George-Etienne Cartier Parkway, the OPS said the airport closed for the evening for an investigation.


According to the OPS, police received a call about a single plane crash at 6:39 p.m. on Sept. 14.

A man gained access to the grounds of the airport and stole a privately owned aircraft and attempted to fly the plane, but gained minimal air and ended up crashing.

He was arrested at the scene and transported to hospital with minor injuries.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has been notified, but the investigation was referred to the OPS due to the criminal nature of the incident.

The man, 64 from Ottawa, has been charged with theft exceeding $5,000. dangerous operation of a conveyance and operation while prohibited.

He is expected to appear in court on Sept. 15.
