Access to tap water restricted at Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus, two cases of legionellosis detected

By CityNews Ottawa staff

Tap water at two units of the Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus has been restricted after officials confirmed a pair of cases of legionellosis.

The units affected are 5 East and 5 West.

In a statement, hospital officials said they are “working with care teams to ensure alternative water sources are available” so that the impact on patients in the affected units is minimal.

Legionellosis is an infection of the lungs caused by the Legionella bacteria. It can cause two types of infections which are Legionnaires’ disease, a severe type of pneumonia, and Pontiac fever, a milder, flu-like illness.

People can be infected by inhaling water droplets from a contaminated water supply.
