What you need to know about Remembrance Day ceremonies across Ottawa and eastern Ontario

Canadians are set to gather in memorial parks, community halls, workplaces, schools and homes to stand in honour of armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

Remembrance Day will be observed on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Ottawa ceremonies

National War Memorial

The National Remembrance Day ceremony is scheduled at the National War Memorial, starting at 10:30 a.m.

This year’s ceremony will again include a full grand Veterans’ Parade and a fly-past and the Royal Canadian legion is broadcasting the ceremony on its website. 

Also of note, the City of Ottawa will restrict road access around the National War Memorial before and during the ceremony.

Beechwood Cemetery

Military members of the National Capital Region and their families and friends are invited to observe Remembrance Day at the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces.

Canadian War Museum

At exactly 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, sunlight enters through a single window in Memorial Hall, illuminating the headstone of Canada’s Unknown Soldier.

Barrhaven

The Barrhaven Legion is hosting its Remembrance Day ceremony at John McCrae Secondary School.

A parade will begin at 10:45 a.m., followed by a ceremony at 11 a.m.

Following the ceremony, the Barrhaven Legion will be hosting a reception in halls A and B of the Walter Baker Centre. Everyone is welcome.

Greely

The Greely and District Legion Branch 627 hosts its Remembrance Day ceremony at the Legion Hall on Mitch Owens Road.

The service begins at 10:45 a.m. and more information can be found here

Kanata

The Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638 hosts its Remembrance Day ceremony in Village Green Memorial Park.

A parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. followed by a ceremony at the Cenotaph.  

There will also be a service after the ceremony at the hall of the Kanata Legion.

Orléans

Remembrance Day will be observed at the Royal Canadian Legion Orléans Branch 632.

The parade starts at 10:40 a.m. and any veterans who wish to take part are asked to meet at Vimont Crescent for 10:35 a.m.

A lunch to follow in the Legion and all are welcome.

Richmond

The Royal Canadian Legion Richmond Branch 625 will hold a Remembrance Day service at the Richmond Memorial Park on the corner of Perth and McBean Streets.

A parade will leave the Old Richmond Plaza at 10:40 a.m. and arrive at the Cenotaph at 10:50 p.m.

Expect road closures in the area before, during and after the service.

Stittsville

The Royal Canadian Legion Stittsville Branch 618 will observe Remembrance Day Saturday afternoon.  

A parade will depart the Legion at 1481 Stittsville Main Street between 1:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. and march north to Warner-Colpitts Lane for a 2 p.m. service by the Cenotaph.

Light refreshments will be served at the legion following the ceremony.

Vanier

The Royal Canadian Legion Eastview Branch 462 is hosting an afternoon Remembrance Day service.

A parade will form at the Legion at 1:30 p.m. and arrive at the Cenotaph located at the corner of Hannah Street and Marier Avenue at 1:40 p.m.

A service will be held at the Cenotaph starting at 2 p.m., including the laying of wreaths and a parade back to the Legion.

Light refreshments will be served at the Legion and the RCAF Piping Band will perform at 3 p.m.

 Westboro

The first branch ceremony takes place at the Carlingwood Shopping Centre at 11 a.m. and the service and wreath-laying ceremony at the Westboro Cenotaph begins at 2 p.m.

Eastern Ontario ceremonies

Almonte

The Royal Canadian Legion Almonte Branch 240 will observe Remembrance day with a parade, ceremony and reception.

The parade will start at the Almonte Legion at 10:45 a.m. and end at the Cenotaph on Bride Street for an 11 a.m. ceremony.

A reception will follow at the Legion and more information can be found here.

Also of note, there will be no parking in front of the Cenotaph from Friday, Nov. 10 to Sunday, Nov. 12th.

Brockville

The Brockville Remembrance Day Ceremony begins at Brockville City Hall at 10:30 a.m..

Dignitaries and service members will lead a procession to the Brockville Cenotaph where the outdoor ceremony will be held.

Carleton Place

The Carleton Place Legion Captain A. Roy Brown Branch 192 has organized the annual parade and Cenotaph Ceremony.

The parade will form up on Mill Street at Bridge Street beside the Town Hall at 10:15 a.m. and march off at 10:30 a.m.

The parade, which will be led by Parade Commander, Peter Schaffer, Immediate Past President of the local Legion Branch, will march from Mill Street along Bridge Street to Franklin Street and onto Veterans Way in front of the Cenotaph.

The Cenotaph Ceremony will begin in Veterans Memorial Park at 10:50 a.m. and will also be streamed on the Captain A. Roy Brown Branch 192 Facebook page.(link)

Also this year, a Pipe Band will be included in the parade and a military fly past included in the Ceremony.

Kingston

The city’s 2023 Civic Ceremony takes place at the Cross of Sacrifice Cenotaph in McDonald Park, near Murney Tower.

The bilingual civic service will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., however, spectators should be in place by 10:40 a.m. to see the parade march on ahead of the service.

The public is also invited to watch the laying of the wreaths before the service, starting at 9:15 a.m.

Schedule:

  • 9:15 a.m. Community Wreath Laying Ceremony
  • 10:15 a.m. Veterans and Military Groups Wreath Laying Ceremony
  • 10:45 a.m. The Civic Ceremony
  • The service will be in French and English, and an ASL interpreter will be present.

Merrickville

The Royal Canadian Legion Merrickville Branch will observe Remembrance Day with a parade, ceremony and potluck.

Those taking part in the parade are asked to meet at the corner of St. Lawrence and Drummond streets at 10:30 a.m., while everyone else is asked to gather at the Cenotaph by 10:45 a.m.

The Legion will host a Potluck lunch following the ceremony and everyone is welcome.

The Royal Canadian Legion Perth-Upon-Tay Branch 244 will host a Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph at 33 Drummond Street West.

The ceremony will get underway at 10:45 a.m.
