Ottawa’s Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) team is set to kick off its inaugural season against Montreal on Jan. 2, 2024.
The two teams will clash at TD Place Arena, which will serve as the home for Ottawa’s yet to be named PWHL team.
The PWHL season will officially begin the before, on New Year’s Day, with a matchup between New York and Toronto.
“TD Place is the go-to place for sports and entertainment in our city and we are honoured to be one of only six North American sites for the launch of the PWHL,” said OSEG CEO Mark Goudie, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) “Ottawa, and Lansdowne, have seen more than their share of historic hockey games over the last century and we are proud to play a small roll in the latest of those with Ottawa’s first modern day professional women’s hockey team.”
The PWHL officially launched in August with the introduction of six original teams and the foundation to assemble rosters featuring the best women’s hockey players in the world. Among the stars suiting up for Ottawa are Canadian Olympians Emily Clark, Brianne Jenner, Emerance Maschmeyer, and the team’s fifth overall draft pick Savannah Harmon.
Carla MacLeod, who as a player is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2006, 2010) with Canada who also won four IIHF Women’s World Championship medals (one gold and three silver), will be behind the bench when Ottawa’s PWHL team hits the ice starting in January of 2024.
