Police brace for demonstrations in Ottawa this weekend

Police warn they will be out in force in the capital this weekend following reports of planned demonstrations within the city.

Ontario Police Service (OPS) confirmed Friday that they are aware of multiple, march-type demonstrations planned that could impact the downtown core and near the Rideau Centre.

Police said the demonstrations have different starting times and officers will be on hand to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Police also confirmed there could be road closures this weekend but would not elaborate where or when.

The warning comes just a week after a pro-Palestinian protest took place at the Bayshore Shopping Centre in Ottawa that was targeting the clothing retailer Zara on December 15.

At the time, the Spanish fashion brand pulled advertising images that, to some, appeared to reference Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, sparking demonstrations in Ottawa and Toronto.

OPS reminds the public to respect barriers and follow police instructions in the event of road closures.
