Want to put on your own NYE fireworks show? You could be fined

While an official fireworks display by the government won’t be gracing the skies near Parliament Hill, the city is asking residents to not step in and put on their own show.

Under Ottawa’s Fireworks Bylaw, consumer fireworks are only permitted on June 30, July 1 and July 2.

“We understand the excitement around celebrating New Year’s Eve,” said Roger Chapman, director of Ottawa’s by-law and regulatory services. “However, it is important to prioritize safety and ensure the well-being of our community.”

Chapman warns that violating the bylaw could net a fine of $265, including a victim surcharge.

This might be expected for longtime residents, but for newcomers who may be looking forward to experiencing an iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration in the nation’s capital, that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.

Ever since Centre Block, the main building on Parliament Hill, began a decade-long renovation in 2018, most celebrations have been scaled back significantly.

2018 was also the last time the Department of Canadian Heritage put on a New Year’s Eve fireworks show in Ottawa.

Instead, Winter Lights Across Canada continues to cover holiday celebrations by highlighting sites along Confederation Boulevard every evening until January 7.

“We encourage residents to explore alternative ways to celebrate safely and responsibly,” Chapman said.
