O-Train service resumes following partial shutdown for structural inspection

Line 1 of the O-Train has resumed service following a shut down in the city’s east end Tuesday morning.

OC Transpo halted train service between Blair and St-Laurent stations in order to complete a structural inspection after concrete debris was found on the track.

In an update issued Tuesday evening, the general manager for OC Transpo said the Infrastructure and Water Services Department (IWSD) was notified of the debris at St-Laurent Station and that it conducted a condition assessment to identify the cause.

“Results from the inspection confirmed delamination, which is the separation of the paste layer at the surface, creating an unbonded layer with the main slab,” said Renée Amilcar, OC Transpo’s general manager.

“With direction and oversight from the structural engineer, sounding and scaling was conducted by a contractor to remove the small concrete pieces that had separated from the main slab.”

Amilcar adds that the St. Laurent Bus Rapid Transit Station was constructed in the mid 1980’s and that it’s not uncommon to see delamination and scaling required in a structure of this age and with this level of complexity.

The work was completed by 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday with a structural engineer confirming that service could resume safely.

O-Train Line 1 service resumed shortly before 5 p.m. and Amilcar said IWSD will continue to conduct routine condition assessments of the structure.
