Car falls through ice into the Ottawa river

A person escaped injury after driving their car into the Ottawa river in the capital’s west end Saturday.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) said their Ice Rescue Teams were dispatched near Dunrobin and Opeongo Roads at around 4:18 p.m. after a vehicle drove onto the river and broke through the ice.

Fire crews said en route they were told the vehicle’s driver was helped by a civilian and was safe on shore.

Firefighters were on scene and found a vehicle partially submerged in the river around 30 metres from the shoreline.

OFS said the driver wasn’t injured.

The driver’s age or gender wasn’t identified.
