Firefighter injured, pets saved in Barrhaven fire

A firefighter was injured after a partial roof collapse during a two-alarm house fire in a southern suburb of the capital Friday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Service (OFS) said multiple 9-1-1 calls reported smoke and flames coming from a single family home in the 0-100 block of Sutcliffe Terrace at around 2 p.m.

OFS arrived on scene and saw that the house’s garage was up in flames and had spread to the neighbour’s house.

While fire crews were inside the home, the roof partially collapsed on one of the firefighters who attempted to shield the other members from harm.

The firefighter managed to escape the building and was brought to hospital.

OFS confirmed he was later released after being cleared and is currently recovering at home.

The homeowners managed to exit safely and OFS rescued their five pets — three dogs, a cat and a rabbit.

The fire that spread to the neighbour’s house was brought under control at 2:32 p.m. and the main fire was knocked down shortly afterwards.

Three people were displaced from the main fire, two from the other home.

An Ottawa Fire Investigator was dispatched to the scene.
