OFS rescues man and dog from the Ottawa River

A man and their dog were rescued by firefighters after falling through the ice in Orleans while walking along the Ottawa River.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) said the call came in at around 10:45 a.m. OFS spokesperson Nick DeFazio said it happened near François Dupont Park.

Fire crews rushed to the scene and ice-rescue technicians pulled the pair out, bringing the pair back on shore by 11:15 a.m.

Firefighters treated both for hypothermia before transferring the man to paramedics. Residents were seen helping to keep the dog warm after the icy plunge.

OFS ran a social media campaign on Tuesday, releasing a video on how to save yourself if you fall through ice. Recently, a car also fell through into the Ottawa River.

“This serves as a reminder that with the warm weather we are having in Ottawa, no ice is safe ice,” DeFazio said.

“Please stay off the ice.”
