Canadian Forces members charged with drug and weapons offences

Two members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) stationed at a military base northwest of the city are facing drug and weapons charges.

The Department of National Defense (DND) said the soldiers were suspected of trafficking cocaine and other drugs to CAF members at CFB Petawawa. Military police said the accused were also selling to nearby civilians.

The DND said that authorities seized crack cocaine, cocaine and meth with a street value of $35,000 on Tuesday. Police also said they found drug trafficking paraphernalia, $5,000 and a handgun.

Bombadier Nathan Saunders and Corporal Rickardo Bryca, both of the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, were charged with possession and trafficking of a schedule 1 substance as well as possession with the purpose of trafficking of a schedule 1 substance.

Saunders was further charges with careless storage of a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Authorities charged them under civilian law and the pair’s trial date is at an undetermined time in the future.
