Report: Senators’ Jake Sanderson unlikely to play vs. Maple Leafs

The Ottawa Senators aren’t expected to have Jake Sanderson back in the lineup for Saturday’s Battle of Ontario against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The defenceman was not on the ice for Senators practice on Thursday and PostMedia’s Bruce Garrioch is reporting that he will most likely not play against the Maple Leafs.

Sanderson suffered a lower-body injury on Jan. 31 against the Detroit Red Wings. He left the Senators bench in the first period and did not return for the second.

Goaltender Anton Forsberg was back on the ice at practice. The 31-year-old has been out since Jan. 13 when he sustained a groin injury while attempting to make a save against the Buffalo Sabres.

Sanderson, 21, has 24 points (seven goals and 17 assists) in 47 games this season, his second in the NHL. The six-foot-two blue liner was selected by Ottawa fifth overall in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Saturday’s game against the Leafs will be Ottawa’s return to action from the NHL All-Star break.
