Search for missing Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory woman ends in tragedy

Police said a 38-year-old woman who was last seen on Jan. 9 in a rural community west of Kingston, Ont. was found dead on Saturday.

Provincial police said search and rescue divers found Michelle Kunkel’s body in Shannonville, Ont., under the ice in Salmon River.

“Michelle has been located, but it was an outcome no one wanted,” wrote police in a Facebook post. “The Tyendinaga Police wish to express heartfelt condolences to Michelle’s family and the friends that stood by them.”

Kunkel was last seen on Huron Brant Drive, in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

Police said they are still investigating but do not suspect foul play.
