Teen arrested shortly after stealing vehicle from Ottawa home

A teenager has been arrested by Ottawa police after stealing a vehicle from a home Thursday night. It happened around 9:45 p.m. in the Kanata area.

Police say the stolen vehicle was a Toyota truck and was taken from the exterior of the residence. It was then reported stolen by the owner of the truck.

Once in the vehicle, the suspect took off driving onto the highway. Once there, patrol officers noticed it ‘driving erratically’ and police say they confirmed it to be the stolen Toyota and made an attempt to pull over the driver.

The suspect then exited the highway in an effort to evade police. Eventually, the vehicle was stopped and the arrest was made after a short chase on foot with police.

The suspect was identified as an 18-year-old from Montreal, Que. They have been charged with the following:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
  • Damage to property over $5,000
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from a police officer
  • Breach of probation

No injuries to the suspect and officers were reported.

Ottawa police are taking this opportunity to remind car owners of various way to reduce a vehicle’s vulnerability to theft.

Some suggestions include parking it in a locked garage and using an after market anti-theft device.
