Firefighters battle Bearbrook fire in freezing temperatures

Fire crews knocked down a porch fire that spread to a home in the city’s east end Friday night.

OFS says they received a call at around 9 p.m. from an occupent of a single storey bungalow in the 5000 block of Dunning road. The caller said a back porch fire spread to their home.

Fire crews arrived on scene and had to extinguish a fire on the main floor, attic and back porch. The resident warned them that there was a propane tank on the porch and oil tanks in the basement.

Most of the home had to be cracked open to search for hot spots and get to the blaze.

No hydrants are in that part of the city so firefighters had to shuttle in water with tanker trucks.

Three people live at the residence. While they were displaced, they didn’t need victim assistance.

OC Transpo sent a bus to the scene so firefighters could warm up in rotating shifts.
