Final suspect wanted in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory kidnapping case arrested

The final individual wanted in connection with a home invasion, kidnapping and assault in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory has been arrested.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad located and arrested Ashley Cummings, 36, on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Deseronto.

Cummings faces the following charges:

  • Assault with a weapon (two counts)
  • Kidnapping
  • Conspiracy to commit and indictable offence-kidnapping
  • Forcible confinement
  • Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
  • Robbery with violence
  • Theft under $5000
  • Break and enter with intent to commit and indictable offence
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Disguise with intent

Cummings remains in custody ahead of a bail hearing today in Belleville.

Five other individuals are already before the courts on similar charges.

Background

OPP officers to an assault at a home on Atsia Court on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory around 4:30 a.m. on January 28, 2024. It was reported that several individuals had entered the home, assaulted a male and took him away in a vehicle.

He was assaulted again and then then dropped off in another part of the community.

The victim did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.
