Ottawa-Centre MPP Joel Harden is looking to grab a seat at the federal level.
CityNews has confirmed that Harden submitted his paperwork seeking the nomination to run as the NDP candidate in the Ottawa-Centre federal riding. The news first surfaced in the Kitchissippi Times.
The federal NDP says it doesn’t usually comment on the nomination process. In the event Harden’s application is approved, he will still be required to win a nomination battle if he faces challengers for the candidacy.
In the 2018 Ontario election, Harden beat then Liberal incumbent Yasir Naqvi to become the new MPP for Ottawa-Centre. Harden still holds that seat at Queen’s Park.
Naqvi went on to become the Ottawa-Centre MP following the 2021 election earning 45% of the votes. He beat runner-up and then NDP candidate Angella MacEwen by nearly 10,000 votes.
Naqvi still sits as the Ottawa-Centre MP and holds the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health in the Trudeau government. He ran for the Ontario Liberal Leadership in 2023 but lost to Bonnie Crombie.
The next federal election is not scheduled until 2025.
