Woman shot by Ottawa police while attempting to flee traffic stop, SIU investigating

One woman has been injured following a shooting with police on Avondale Avenue in the Westboro neighbourhood of Ottawa, Ont.

The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said it occurred at around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said in a release that an OPS officer initiated a traffic stop in the area of Churchill Avenue and Avondale Avenue.

A 25-year-old woman got out of the vehicle and took off from police. The officer followed and discharged his firearm. The woman was struck and injured.

She was transported to hospital and is currently in critical condition.

The SIU have assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

Ottawa police initially said there was a police presence in the area around 1:45 p.m. and encouraged people to avoid the area.

OPS will not be commenting further and said further updates will be provided by the SIU.
