The Ottawa Police Services have charged a woman with assault and harassment by threatening conduct and mischief after a demonstration at City Hall.
On May 14 at about 5:30 p.m. the victim was taking part in a legal demonstration when a person approached her and removed her hijab.
The person was also making “lewd gestures.”
Police have now identified and charged a 74-year-old who will appear in court at a later date. All charges were hate-related, police said.
According to an email sent to CityNews Ottawa, police do not always identify the charged person in hate-motivated crimes.
Officials are encouraging anyone who witnesses or experienced similar incidents to report them to police.
