Charges laid following noxious substance incident at Ottawa graduation ceremony

Several charges have been laid following an assault of a security guard involving a noxious substance at a graduation ceremony in downtown Ottawa.

According to the Ottawa Police Service (OPS), several individuals disrupted a university graduation ceremony being held at the Shaw Centre on the morning of June 9.

As the individuals were being removed, police say the accused used a noxious substance weapon on a security guard.

The security guard was seen by the Ottawa Paramedic Service on scene, but she did not require hospitalization.

Police located the individual near Tabaret Hall on the University of Ottawa campus and later arrested him when it was safe to do so.

The unidentified 27-year-old man faces the following charges:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace
  • Administering a noxious substance
  • Mischief

The accused is due in court Monday morning.
