Ottawa mayor speaks out about ‘serious’ threats made against councillor

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is speaking out about the threats made to Rideau-Vanier Councillor Stéphanie Plante.

Earlier this week, Plante posted on X to thank Ottawa Police Service for arresting a man in connection to threats made against her.

According to the councillor the threats were “very detailed” and “serious.” Plante said she was “relieved” to hear that nothing escalated further.

On Thursday, Ottawa’s mayor commented on the situation, saying the incident is “very troubling.”

“No one, including elected officials, should face hostility and aggression for doing their job,” he said in a post on X.

Sutcliffe said he will continue to advocate against the “toxic behaviour.”

“It’s time to stop accepting and normalizing toxic behaviour in politics and public discourse as though it is something beyond our control,” he said.
