Gas leak forces evacuations of four homes in Sandy Hill

Ottawa police closed a portion of Somerset Street East and Nelson Street due to a gas leak on Wednesday morning.

A call came in to 9-1-1 at about 10:11 a.m., Ottawa fire media officer Nick DeFazio told CityNews. There were reports of a “hissing” sound in the 200 block of Somerset Street East.

Once on scene crews determined a low-pressure six inch natural gas line was severed by an excavator doing construction in the area.

Firefighters evacuated four homes on Somerset Street East and created a “public exclusion zone” during the operation. The area is largely residential and is nearby the University of Ottawa campus.

Enbridge staff arrived on scene at 11:55 a.m. and “crimped” the pipe to stop the leaking.

Roads have now reopened in the area.
