City under rainfall warning, up to 100 mm of precipitation possible

A rainfall warning remains in effect for a large swath of eastern Ontario, including the National Capital Region.

Environment Canada says rain is forecast to continue through the day Friday due to a low-pressure system interacting with the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible,” the warning reads.

Rainfall amounts between 50 and 100 mm are possible by the time the precipitation tapers off later this evening.

The warning is in effect for an area including:

  • Ottawa-Gatineau
  • Renfrew
  • Arnprior
  • Calabogie
  • Smiths Falls
  • Perth
  • Eastern Lanark County
  • Richmond
  • Metcalfe
  • Merrickville-Wolford
  • Prescott and Russell County
  • Kemptville
  • Plevna
  • Sharbot Lake
  • Western Lanark County
  • Westport
  • Charleston Lake
  • Kingston

In the afternoon, the City of Ottawa closed all city sports fields as baseball diamonds, soccer fields and parks were impacted by heavy rainfall.

Parks and sports fields are scheduled to reopen on Saturday. Baseball diamonds will remain closed Saturday but are expected to reopen Sunday as long as the infields dry out.

The city asks the public to “refrain from using affected spaces until they have dried sufficiently”, reads a city release.
