Door-to-door fraudster claiming to be with Service Ontario in Carleton Place

A warning from provincial police to be on guard against a fraudster in Carleton Place.

According to the Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), a male has been going to homes in the Sarah Street area telling the residents that there is a lien on their property.

The fraudster claims to be working with Service Ontario and that to remove that lien, the homeowner must pay an up-front fee.

Police say the scammer even provides a realistic-looking receipt that appears to be from Service Canada.

If people encounter this individual or anyone making such a claim, police say they should ask the person to leave, and when in doubt, contact Service Ontario directly.

Contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and report suspected or potential fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

This comes after police in North Grenville warned of an increase in grandparent scams in eastern Ontario. Other officials around the nation’s capital also note multiple scams, including ones involving Uber, taxis and parking fees.
