Police looking for female suspect after recovering a stolen vehicle

Officers from the Ottawa detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking for a female that fled after a vehicle theft.

It happened just before 6:00 a.m. on Sept. 21, when an officer was travelling on Terry Fox Road in Ottawa’s west end. His shift was ending so he was going to get gas when he received a notification of a possible stolen vehicle by the cruiser’s Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system.

“Having the ALPR unit does make it easier to track stolen vehicles,” OPP officer Michael Fathi said. “The stolen vehicle’s information is uploaded to the ALPR system and if it goes by a cruiser equipped with the ALPR unit, a notification will pop up on the officer’s screen.”

The stolen vehicle stopped in at the gas station when the officer activated his lights.

As a result, a 34-year-old man was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and driving while under suspension.

Police are still looking to speak with a female passenger of the vehicle who fled the scene. Fathi tells CityNews that there is no description of the female suspect since police are waiting on security camera footage from the gas station.

Police have since returned the vehicle to the owner.

Those with any information regarding the female, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference case number E241266349 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
