Ottawa police investigating possible attempted child abduction in Orléans

Police are reminding parents and guardians to go over safety tips with children after a suspicious incident in Orléans.

Officers from the sexual assault and child abuse section (SACA) are asking the public for help to identify a suspect and vehicle in Ottawa’s east-end community.

On Oct. 6, between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., a man approached a group of children offering candy. While in his vehicle, the suspect slowed and stopped next to the children. When another adult approached the situation the suspect drove off quickly, a police release noted.

He is described as a middle eastern male in his 50s. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a hat. The vehicle he drove is a black or dark-coloured sedan and could have been travelling south on Boyer Road, then west toward Hunters Run Gate.

Police say children walking alone should:

• Ensure a family member or caregiver knows your route and arrival time;
• Not talk to strangers;
• Not accept rides from strangers;
• If an unknown adult is seeking your attention, do not approach them or the vehicle;
• If being followed, go to a public place, a known residence or shout for help
