Man goes unconscious in OPP holding cell; SIU investigating

A person was transported to hospital after going unconscious in the holding cell of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Long Sault, south of the nation’s capital along the Seaway.

On Dec. 16 around midnight, officers with OPP Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) responded to a suspected impaired driver in South Dundas Township. The 34-year-old man was arrested and charged with weapons and drug offences after police found a stun gun, suspected fentanyl, crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

He was put in the cells at the SD&G detachment.

Several hours later he became unresponsive, police note in a press release, and was taken to hospital by Cornwall SD&G paramedics.

Due to this incident happening while the person was in custody, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and invoked its mandate. The agency investigates any situation of injury or death during police interactions or while in police custody.
