The nation’s capital is expected to feel freezing temperatures through the first week of 2025, as overnight lows stay in the minus double digits throughout the week.
According to Environment Canada, Ottawa temperatures will drop to -9 C as of 2 p.m. this afternoon, with a mix of sun and cloud.
During the evening hours, temperatures are expected to drop to a low of -13 C, with the wind chill making it feel like – 22 C.
Based on historical data, the lowest temperature recorded on this day at the Ottawa MacDonald-Cartier International Airport was -31.1 C (1945), with an average minimum temperature of -15 C (1939-2011).
Environment Canada predicts cold temperatures in Ottawa will continue through the month of January. While this weather is predicted to persist throughout the week, the National Capital Commission (NCC) is flooding the Rideau Canal Skateway.
“We’re making use of the cold temperatures to speed up our preparations in optimal conditions,” wrote NCC in an email to CityNews.
But the world’s largest skateway remains closed as of Jan. 6.
