On Jan. 21, two young people in Ottawa were charged with stunt driving meaning their vehicles were impounded and they face fines and demerit points upon conviction.
Police from the traffic unit are focusing on “high-risk” drivers. Officers stopped a 19-year-old driver who was “borrowing dad’s car.”
Officials say the driver was travelling 114 km/h in a 60 km/h zone along Riverside Drive.
Later that same day, a 24-year-old driver was also caught in south Ottawa driving 54 km/h over the posted limit.
Police say the driver was travelling down Limebank Road when they clocked the vehicle going 134 km/h in an 80km/h zone.
These two incidents come days after police caught a G2 driver in the same area — Limebank — who was in his parents’ rental car. At the time the 17-year-old was travelling 145 km/h.
Incidents like this are forcing Ottawa police to keep a presence in hotspot communities such as Barrhaven, Kanata, Riverside South and Orléans. This is despite a number of staffing issues in the force including budgetary restraints and retirements.
“The traffic unit, unfortunately, has not been spared of that (staffing shortages) and we’re not at the same manpower where we should be at,” said Craig Roberts, Ottawa Police District Traffic Manager
