ComicCon, snow and hockey: What’s happening in Ottawa this weekend?

It is set to be a busy weekend in the nation’s capital as people can freely go outside with less than three layers on and the full length of the Rideau Canal open.

As always, there are lots of vendor markets, hockey to be seen and things to do outside in Ottawa. The weather is supposed to be full of flurries and the temperatures hovering around -20 in the mornings and rising to the mid-teens by the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

Outside winter activities

Guided snowshoeing: For those ready to traverse the forest and track down animals, Gatineau Park is offering a guided snowshoe hike along Trail 60. It will focus on the strategies animals have to survive the winters and which tracks are from what animals. Snowshoes are provided for free by the park and people can meet at the visitor centre (33 Scott Rd.) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. Book ahead of time, the park asks.

Rideau Canal: An Ottawa classic. The full length of the world’s largest skating rink is open to visitors with rentals available. Ice conditions are “very good.”

Trails for walking or skiing: Close to 100 kilometres of winter-groomed trails are available in partnership with the Urban Winter Trails Alliance and community volunteers. Some include the newly expanded Rideau Winter Trail, Kichi Sibi Winter Trail, Orleans Ski Club and more.
