A modern design compared to the historic, and iconic, look of the Alexandra Bridge was chosen by the National Capital Commission (NCC) Board of Directors.
The bridge allowed trains, horses and wagons and later people, bikes and vehicles to cross the Ottawa River connecting Gatineau to the nation’s capital for over 120 years, but its high use, the elements and road salt have taken a toll on the infrastructure, beyond repair.
“Despite our best efforts to maintain the bridge, assessments and studies show that over the last few years, the state of the bridge has continued to deteriorate,” the Government of Canada’s website reads.
Since 2019, there have been ongoing discussions as to what the next era of the bridge will look like, and late last week, a decision was made.
The concept is called “Motion” and it is described as a design “inspired by nature.”
“It honours the efforts of Indigenous communities for the restoration of traditional habitats and their respected wisdom and dedication to reconciliation and reconnection to the Land,” the NCC website reads.
The white bridge has three arches flowing over the river and a few points for people to gather and look out to the cities.
Officials refused to say how much they think it will cost, but a 2018 assessment suggested a new bridge would come to $800 million.
Following the decision, next steps will include further design feedback and more public consultation with construction set to begin in 2028. Until deconstruction is ready the bridge is set to reopen to the public next month, but no date has been set yet.
One lane has remained accessible to pedestrians and cyclists over the year-long construction that was extended in June 2024.
