Young driver caught going double the speed limit in south Ottawa

Officers have been catching a number of young people driving at high speeds in and around the nation’s capital.

On Thursday, the Ottawa Police Services’ traffic escort officers caught a young driving travelling at over double the speed limit on Riverside Drive near Walkley Road.

The 21-year-old was going 121 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

In the same area earlier that day, police also caught an 18-year-old G2 driver speeding on Limebank Road.

They were going 134 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.

Officials say both were driving their parents’ vehicles and were promptly impounded. Both their licences were suspended and they face stunt driving charges.

In another incident earlier this week, provincial police caught a driver speeding 180 km/h.

This incident happened on Highway 401 near the Town of Prescott, a 100 km/h zone. According to officials, the driver borrowed their friend’s car, which is now impounded for 14 days. This driver also faces a stunt driving charge and their licence is suspended for 30 days.

“Speeds such as this put everyone else at risk, including the two passengers they were carrying at the time,” police said.
