Cement truck driver charged, fined after striking barrier on Highway 417

On Feb. 19, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region reported that a cement truck struck a barrier on the right side of Highway 417 near Vanier.

The driver is now facing charges for careless driving, wrote OPP on X. According to police, the truck was partially blocking a lane — causing over two hours of traffic slowdowns.

As a result of the incident, the truck was badly damaged and has been taken out of service.

The driver is facing a $490 fine and six demerit points upon conviction, noted OPP.

Officers have also been out reminding drivers to clean snow off their vehicles before going behind the wheel since Ottawa and surrounding regions have seen significant snowfall during the past week.

In efforts to enforce road safety, drivers will face a $110 fine for driving with snow on their vehicles.

“Falling snow and ice from vehicles can be extremely dangerous for other motorists, often leading to unnecessary damage to other vehicles,” wrote OPP on X.
