Skating on Rideau Canal not allowed due to late February thaw

People are being asked not to skate down the Rideau Canal but instead walk only on Monday after temperatures rise.

According to the National Capital Commission (NCC), skating is paused as of 8:00 a.m. on Feb. 24 until further notice. The reason for the pause is to protect the ice during the warm spell the nation’s capital is experiencing.

Temperatures climbed above freezing on Monday and are expected to continue until Thursday.

Environment Canada says a snow-rain mix is possible on Monday with a high of 3 C. Tuesday is expected to have chances of showers or a drizzle and Wednesday the sun is likely to come out. All the temperatures are hovering around 2 C.

However, the ice thickness is still safe on Monday for people to walk along the canal. Teams have set up designated walking paths between Waverley and Library access points on the Queen Elizabeth Driveway side of the canal.

Walking is also allowed between Queen and Somerset access points.

“Warm weather makes the ice soft and easily damaged by skates,” officials said. “By only using the designated walking lanes, you’ll help us reopen the skating surface faster.”

Those wanting a beavertail can still enjoy one as concession stands, change rooms and washrooms remain open.

The forecast says the cold will be back in Ottawa, as temperatures on Friday and into the weekend have lows of -16 C overnight, Environment Canada’s website shows.
