Synagogue volunteer charged with sexual assault

The Ottawa police laid charges against a man in connection to a sexual assault that happened to a young person.

The press release says that Aklilu Afowerk, 62, is being charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and breach order from a sexual offence conviction. The incident happened in an Ottawa synagogue in 2022. It involved a female victim under the age of 14.

Afowerk previously worked as a property manager, when he was charged with sexual assault against another person under 18.

Police say they are releasing the accused’s photo since they believe there could be other victims.
