Man accused of threatening CHEO security guard with replica gun

A man in his 30s is facing multiple charges following an incident involving a replica gun at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

The incident happened Saturday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. Officers received a 911 call detailing a man seen with a gun in the emergency department of the hospital.

Police were able to safely arrest the suspect a short distance from the hospital and recovered a replica firearm.

It was later concluded through an investigation that the man was asked to leave the property after causing a disturbance and the accompanying child was in the care of another guardian.

Police say that when the man was escorted to the parking lot, he confronted CHEO security staff with the firearm, later determined to be a replica.

The man — whose name will not be released to protect the identity of the child he was with — has been charged with:

  • Harassment by threatening conduct X3
  • Carry concealed weapon
  • Possess weapon dangerous to public peace
  • Fail to comply with undertaking
  • Fail to comply with release order

The investigation is ongoing and police say further charges could be laid.
