Man, 38, charged with murder in connection with eighth homicide of the year

Just days after police started investigating the force’s first femicide of the year, they were called to the city’s eighth homicide since January — and the third in a week.

It happened Friday just before 6:00 a.m. in the 0-100 block of Provender Avenue in the community of Rothwell Heights just east of Vanier.

Officers found Trevor Howard Needham, 42, of Ottawa dead. A woman was also found at the scene suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Jeremy Joseph Young, 38, of Ottawa, has been charged with second-degree murder as well as attempted murder.

Ottawa police issue statement

“While these incidents are not connected, that does not make them any less tragic,” officials said in a statement. “Three lives have been senselessly lost, and families, friends, and loved ones are now grieving.”

Police said they share “the community’s concerns” when it comes to the level of violence seen as of late. In the eight homicides, investigators have laid charges in six of the cases, the statement reads.

“We understand that uncertainty can be frustrating. These investigations are complex, and to ensure a fair and impartial court process, we are limited in the details we can share,” police said.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators, are asked to contact the Homicide Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493.
